Tribadism

Tribadism or tribbing is a form of mutual masturbation in which a woman rubs her vulva against her partner's body for sexual stimulation. The term is most often used in the context of lesbian sex, but is not exclusive to lesbians. Tribadism can also refer to a masturbation technique in which a woman rubs her vulva against an inanimate object such as a bolster in an effort to achieve orgasm, (see Definitions page for revised Tribadism definition).

Tribbing is often thought of as the most natural lesbian position. Often arrived at accidentally by basic animalistic urges rather than external cultural influences, many women admit to having tribadism experiences early in their sex lives while experimenting with mutual stimulation with other women, long before they knew it had a name.

Popularity

In Real Life

A survey showed that over 70% of women who had had a lesbian experience had done Tribadism so its certainly popular in real life. The Tribadism positions are often arrived at naturally when two women have a body-on-body passionate sexual interaction. With two bodies writhing close together, pleasure can be found in Frottage which could easily lead to a type of Tribadism.

However, the deliberate and more intense forms of Tribadism are often described as painful or uncomfortable and hence counteractive to acheiving orgasm. In its pure, pre-meditated form it seams to be a rarity which is either loved or hated with very little inbetween.

In Erotica

Despite its avid fans, Tribadism is not a staple in lesbian erotica. It is unclear exactly why this is, but there are many factors that are likely to have an effect. The 'real life' popularity referred to above obviously plays a role in how easy and desirable it is for porn stars to perform. There may not be a very big market either with pussy licking and toys being the more preferred lesbian erotica activities.

We would also speculate that the obscurity of the term, lack of clarity of the definition (see Tribadism Definition), nature of the act and plethora of colloquialisms contribute to Tribadism Erotica being much less known of and hence less celebrated than it could be.

History

Until the 20th century, the term was used to refer to lesbian sexual practices in general. Therefore, lesbians were occasionally called tribades. There is some evidence that the word has its roots in ancient Greek/Roman times, making it around 2000 years old.

In cultures where lesbianism was generally accepted, the genital-genital technique, which we now call Tribadism, was an abomination because many of the positions require one woman to be dominant, a role that was supposed to be only filled by men. In male orientated society, the dominant female was seen as a threat to male control.

Colloquialisms

Many women have experienced Tribadism and many more of both sexes have enjoyed Tribadism erotica, but very few of them know the correct term. The most common colloquialism is "Scissoring," popularised by South Park, and fairly self explanatory when you consider the body and leg placement to acheive many pussy on pussy positions.

Aside from 'Scissoring,' there is a long list of colloquial terms in use such as "bumping donuts", "clit-clatting", "clam clashing", "pussy grinding", "mashing cookies", "grinding beans", "clam jousting", "touching tacos", "taco bumping" or "bumping fur" more...

Types of Tribadism

There are two main types of lesbian tribadism, as depicted in erotica, which are quite different from each other. The first type, and the type that tends to spring to mind first is the sensuous, loving tribadism which is simply another position employed by lesbian couples when they are having sex. The second type, commonly labeled as 'Aggressive Tribadism,' is a collection of mutually stimulating positions employed in erotic, forced-orgasm sexfights.

There is also a third type which is actually a sub-type under the 'Aggresive' banner. This type is called 'Erotic Wrestling,' which is another kind of sexual competition which might be used as foreplay, to play out a fantasy or perhaps to settle differences. The continuous struggling and position changing of the two, often naked or semi-naked, combatants inevitably leads to some accidental tribadism positions. If the rivals find they enjoy these positions, the action could develop into some aggressive sex or possibly a sexfight.

Tribadism Positions

There are a number of different positions that allow for direct pussy on pussy contact. The various positions have contrasting advantages and disadvantages such as more direct genital contact for hard lesbian pussy grinding generally means less intimacy such as kissing and fondling. Four of the most common positions are listed below (for full list see main Tribadism Positions article).

Health risks

Since genital to genital contact with possible fluidic exchange does indeed occur in tribadism, it is possible to contract a sexually transmitted disease from the practice. Thus, it should be practiced with the same regard for safety as any other sexual act where genital to genital contact occurs to avoid transmission.

Tribadism among bonobo females

The Bonobo, which, until recently, usually was called the Pygmy Chimpanzee and less often, the Dwarf or Gracile Chimpanzee, is a great ape and one of the two species making up the genus, Pan. The Bonobo is endangered and only is found in the wild in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Along with the Common Chimpanzee, the Bonobo is the closest relative to humans.

Sexual intercourse plays a major role in bonobo society, being used as a greeting, a means of conflict resolution, and post-conflict reconciliation. With the exception of a pair of Cohan gorillas observed doing so, Bonobos were thought to be the only non-human apes to have been observed engaging in all of the following sexual activities: face-to-face genital sex, tongue kissing, and oral sex. In scientific literature, the female-female sexual behavior often is referred to as GG rubbing, genital-genital rubbing, or "Scissoring".

Tribadism in popular culture

Bands

The Scissor Sisters, an American band that formed in 2001, who have had massive success in the UK and Ireland, derive their name from the scissoring position. Other bands named after tribadism include Scissorfight and the lesbian punk band Tribe 8- an all-women outspoken dyke punk band from San Francisco, USA.

Television .

Genital-genital tribadism was depicted three times during South Park's 1106 Episode, "D-Yikes!" where it is referred to as "Scissoring" helping to popularise the slang term. South Park is a Peabody and Emmy Award-winning American animated television series created, written and voiced by Matt Stone and Trey Parker.
